City Directories and History: 1961 – Pope Funeral Home, 1981 – Pope Funeral Home
Harden Funeral Home began by providing caskets as part of their service to the community and at the furniture company on South Congress Street. As was common in that era, a funeral home business grew from the furniture store and eventually the Harden family established an independent funeral home which was purchased by the Pope family.
Built in the late Nineteenth Century by Mr. and Mrs. D.V. Walker for their family which consisted of Alice Americus, David, Jr. and J.B.”Pat” Walker. After their deaths, the three children built homes on adjoining land parcels. Alice built a duplex home immediately behind the home on Buchanan Street in the thirties. Brothers Dave and Pat built on the next two lots north on Congress Street. [Contribution by J.M. Lyles, III]

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
