City Directories and History: 1961 – Southern Railway Freight Depot
The 1912 Sanborn Map for Winnsboro shows this as the freight depot, an important landmark in the agricultural and commercial livelihood of the town and county. It would have been from this location that thousands of bales of cotton were sent to market from Fairfield County farmers. The platform would have been loaded with cotton bales being shipped out and farm equipment unloaded for the merchants and farmers of the region.
Railroad freight stations were an essential part of the transportation system throughout the South.
