City Directories and History: 1961 – Funderburg’s Grocery & Market
“The Board of Trade of Winnsboro is composed of all the leading merchants of the town and is entirely engaged in studying out plans for its development. The officers are T. H. Ketchin, president; J. M. Beaty, W. R. Doty, and J. Q. Davis, vice presidents; and R. M. Huey, secretary and treasurer. The trade of the town is estimated at one million dollars per annum, and the cotton shipments at about fifteen thousand bales a year.” Reprinted from South Carolina in the 1880s: A Gazetteer by J.H. Moore, Sandlapper Publishing Company – 1989
The Beaty’s grocery was located approximately at this site next to the Methodist church. The Beaty family lived on South Congress Street. Mr. Beaty’s business was followed in the Twentieth Century by the Hanahan Garage later run by Mr. Leroy Hanna and Albert Doty. After the Second World War the building was used as a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership.
Late in the Nineteenth Century Reuben Lumpkin lived in the next residence, followed by several bar rooms, and a two story building called the Shaw Hotel. On December 23, 1893 a fire started in W.A. Beckham’s store and burned the three properties almost to the present building now owned by The Herald Independent at 127 N. Congress Street. Prior businesses in the last century at this approximate location have been Mr. K.R. McMaster‘s general store, followed by J. Shaw Ketchin’s hardware – building supply. [Information provided by J.M. Pictured below along North Congress Street, is Wm. Royston Doty, a local businessman with strong ties to the Doty Brothers Livery.
