City Directories and History: Caldwell House, 1961- Avery H. Caldwell, 1981 – Caldwell Home
In 1834 this lot was owned by Mrs. Rebecca Yongue, who gave it to her daughter, Elizabeth B. Bones. This is one of the earlier cottage style homes built in Winnsboro. The portico is supported by eight fluted columns, giving it a handsome appearance. [Courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce]
Elizabeth P. Bones remained in the house until 1866 when she deeded it to her grand-daughter Harriett Woodward Palmer, wife of Dr. John D. Palmer of Ridgeway. It was used as a rental for mostly family refugees after the war, then sold in 1884 to Henry L. Elliott who gave it to his daughter Marion E. Caldwell as a wedding gift. Her son H. E. Caldwell and his family remained there until 1999. Current owners are Ron and Pam Smith. [Contributed by J.M. Lyles, III]
