City Directories and History: 1912 – U.S. Postal Service, 1961 – Propst’s Ladies Shop
Part of what was listed in 1912 as the Desportes Block of buildings, starting with #45, and running through #47 South Congress Street. The group consisted of four
buildings including; a general store, post office, fruit – candy store, a grocery. This location was approximately where the U.S. Post Office building was operated in 1912, (not the current location of the U.S. Post Office).
The Propst family ran a ladies’ and gentlemen’s clothier business in the next property for two generations. Ernest Propst, Jr., rebuilt the store in the late 1950’s and it is now the home of Best For Less at 126 South Congress Street. Also, the Landeckers, George R. and Sallie C., had their fashionable store in the same area.
