City Directories and History: The eldest son, Tom Phillips, learned his father’s skills and continued in the business. Tom married Margaret Elizabeth Tennant whose mother ran the recently demolished hotel behind the town clock where Joe and Patty Wilkes have built their new
manufacturing facility Wilkes Ironworks. This generation of Phillips included six children, Jeanette, Margaret, Rosemary, Elizabeth, Catherine, and son “Flip” who continued the family tradition with the repair and restoration of furniture. Henry Phillips who was also active in his father’s business married Clara Johnson. From their four children Martha whose marriage to Henry Ramsey continued the cabinet and furniture traditions, reared four sons who all inherited the talent and parental guidance to learn the skills of the trade. Gene, Pat, Robert, and Jack all learned these skills and have continued to pass them to a fifth generation of Phillips descendents. [Courtesy J.M. Lyles]
This location was also that of the popular Duval Hotel, used by visitors to Winnsboro, who had arrived on the train which ran next to the hotel. The hotel was also called the Stover Hotel.
