City Directories and History: This home was not constructed until after 1912, it shows as part of the adjoining lot on the Sanborn Map. The Harden family, Mr. John M. Harden, Jr., had lived for many years on the second floor of their business, the Harden Hardware and Furniture Company at 158 South Congress Street. The Harden’s opened their funeral business at that location and it was later sold to the Pope Funeral Home on South Congress Street.
Built in 1920’s by Mr.and Mrs. John M. Harden, Jr. for themselves and two sons John, III, and Joe. Mrs. Harden lived her long life in this house and her son Joe and his wife Betty Mayes Harden moved in around 1980 after extensively updating this home. Now Betty’s daughter Liz and her family live in this house. A third generation continues in the house. [Contribution by J.M. Lyles, III]

The top picture is of John Harden Sr with his grandson John III (my uncle). The picture below that is of my mother Margaret Harden McLeod, her grandmother Ella Hood Harden and Margaret’s brother John M. Harden Jr. When the house was built John and Kathleen Harden had two children, Margaret and John. Joe Harden was born later in the Liberty St. house.

Correction: The second picture includes John M. Harden III, not John Jr.
