The Fairfield News and Herald of Nov. 1, 1882 reported – “There was a burglary at the store of Mr. John P. Matthews, Jr., which resulted in goods being stolen worth about $50., including boots, bacon and flour.”

Note the original home did not have the dormer windows and was much simpler than the mid 20th century re-design. Nevertheless, the house remains as one of Winnsboro’s true architectural gems and retains a significant number of its original features. The original cost of the home was reported to be $1,300. and he built his home next to his carriage shop. In 1898 the home was acquired by John P. Matthews. Shortly thereafter, Col. R.H. McMaster for his mother, Mrs. Rachel McMaster Kennedy. Mrs. Kennedy’s daughter continued living here until it was sold in 1950 to Charles E. McDonald.
