City Directories and History: Methodist Church Annex: This, meaning the church building itself, is the third building serving the Methodist congregation, organized in 1808. The floorboards from the original building, located in the cemetery on East Washington, were reused in the second building and again in the floor of the pulpit of the present structure. [Courtesy Chamber of Commerce] One report suggest that Mr. William Lewis and Major Henry Moore may have been the contractors for the church building in circa 1840’s.
The dwelling on this lot was owned by Mrs. Margaret Bruce, who taught piano and lived in this house most of her life. It was bought by the First United Methodist Church from her estate in the 1970’s, and is used as an annex for their functions. [Shared by J.M. Lyles, III]
Notice the 1912 Sanborn Maps shows no dwellings having been built or moved to College Street prior to that date.
