City Directories and History: One of the surviving houses of the late 18th or early 19th century town of Winnsborough, this home has had some renovations in the 19th century but is based on its inner structure and on a rebuilding of a much earlier dwelling which was a customary way to reuse and reconstruct. This practice was commonly used long before those words became intelligent responses to our town history. This jewel of a late 18th century dwelling, much modified, is now in the hands of Stevenson Family descendants. They are saving an important aspect of Winnsboro history by maintaining this jewel of theirs and many other families. [J.M. Lyles, III]
In 1839, James Lemmon sold this lot to John W. Jones, who then sold it shortly thereafter at a profit to Thomas Jordan. John D. and Rebecca Mahon acquired the property and are most likely the builders of the home dating to circa 1840’s. In 1860 the house was sold to Francis Elder who sold it two years later to John H. Cathcart. In 1887, Sarah M. Gladden acquired the property and it has remained in the Gladden family for decades. The house was moved to the rear of the lot by John Douglas, date unknown. [SCDAH]
