“An African American history site.”
City Directories and History: One of the oldest rural African American churches in the area, and only Episcopal one, this church building is not old but the original structure burned and for sometime members of the church worshiped at Little River Baptist.
The church was founded as a mission church by the Diocese of Upper South Carolina in the middle of the Twentieth Century. Bishop Finlay and his successor Bishop Cole and local families including the O’Neals and Pearsons and others formed this mission and sustained it in its early years. It was originally the site of General Thomas McMeekin’s residence (pictured) and near the graves of his wife and himself. The new church building was constructed on this location and has recently been renovated. (2013).
