City Directories and History: A handsome ante-bellum home just west of the Woodard Community in Fairfield County, this house features handsome proportions in a early 19th century dwelling. Architectural notes of interest are the recessed porch, often referred to as a rain porch but most often seen in the Catawba Valley region of South Carolina. Also take notice of the triangular pane windows, a highly common feature of houses in lower Chester County architecture.
This house is reported by one source as late 18th century made of hewn logs by the Woodard family. The Woodards built the house and lived here until 1845. At that time the property was acquired by Dr. George Miller at a time when the area was called Midway, due to the railroad stop being half way between Columbia and Charlotte. In 1911 the property was purchased by Robert Alexander Lewis. Their son, R.A. Lewis, Jr. and his wife, Mildred Hackle Lewis, were the next owners. They farmed and ran a general merchandise store on the property. The current owners are Johnny Lewis (youngest son of R.A. Lewis, Jr.) and his wife Paulette Cook Lewis, who have owned the house since 1975.
