“A classic upcountry S.C. log cabin.”
City Directories and History: One of Fairfield County’s oldest structures is tucked away off of Two Creek Road just inside the Fairfield County line. Known locally as the Montgomery cabin, this house originally was constructed by members of the Brown family and purchased by Agnes Montgomery in 1829. The original owners were James and Grizzy Brown. Also see Elkins Map for the Montgomery Homesite.
The one story log house was constructed with hewn pine logs, a steep roof to allow a sleeping loft, stairs that led to the loft and accomplished artisan-ship. The board and batten doors, wedged with a dovetail batten, remain in excellent condition as does the hand forged thumb latch and strap hinges.
Ample evidence shows the remains of the original front porch, rather large for the period, and the railing that extended around it. Though the cabin has been heavily repaired and updated with inappropriate materials, there remains ample workmanship and materials to suggest this could easily be a pre-Revolutionary cabin in upper Fairfield County, South Carolina.
*** Address is approximate to protect the cabin.
