The Yorkville Enquirer of June 30, 1886 reported – “At Coleman’s in Edgefield Co., W.M. Boazman, was repairing the hearth of Mr. J.C. Strother’s storehouse, were he has been engaged in business for several months. In removing pieces of old brick he found a tin box containing gold, silver, and Hamburg Bank notes worth $27,000. The name of B. Smith was on the box. It is known that several years ago, Benson Smith was a merchant here and before Buck Smith was also a merchant here before the war.”
City Directories and History: This historic map, on the wall of the S.C. Dept. of Archives and History, exhibits some of the numerous locations across S.C. and Edgefield County, which have been nearly forgotten. Rural names and forgotten places recorded on this map, have been extracted and placed in alphabetical order to assist researchers. Also see the entire map under the History Thread link – right.
