The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Aug. 31, 1887 via an article in the Charleston News and Courier – “The free graded school system has been a great success in Johnston in Edgefield County. Since it opened, the town has been making rapid progress. The Johnston High School is without rival in Edgefield County under the management of Prof. J.F. Brown.”
