City Directories and History: R&R has divided the 1939 SCDOT map of Edgefield County into (20) sectional maps. Many of the individually listed schools and churches shown on this section are pictured. However, in many cases, the individual site also has its own post on R&R, which often provides added information and image. Be wise and use the search function to locate all of the entries for this and other homeplace listings.

Red Hill was named in the early 1800’s. On the Robert Mills map of 1817, appears Mrs. Hills Tavern. This is the location of present-day Red Hill. Also, the terrain has very red clay banks along the roadside. The Red Hill Baptist Church was founded in 1835 and that name appears on early church records. In the 1890’s the area was renamed Cold Springs, then renamed Red Hill in the 1920’s. This community is about ten miles west of Edgefield.(Information from: Names in South Carolina by C.H.
