City Directories and History: The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Jan. 27, 1892 – ” A large part of the business district of Edgefield was destroyed by fire. It broke out in the basement of the Masonic Hall, or Advertiser building and spread to surrounding buildings. There is no fire dept. in Edgefield. The jail was threatened but a number of citizens found and saved the jail building. Thomas J. Adams is proprietor of the Edgefield Advertiser and his Masonic Building included several large store rooms.”
