City Directories and History: “Standing like a gracious Southern lady is Magnolia Dale. The large magnolia trees in front and to the side of the house symbolize the beauty of the remembered “lady of Magnolia Dale”—Mrs. Mamie Norris Tillman. Samuel Brooks built the house and planted the Magnolia trees in 1837. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J. Norris bought the house from the Brooks family about 1870. “Magnolia Dale” was bought by the Kendall Company in 1930, since it adjoined the Kendall property. In July, 1959, the Kendall Company transferred the title to the Edgefield County Historical Society, of which Mrs. Tillman was President for twenty-two years. Mr. James Hammond Tillman, her husband, was Lieutenant-Governor of South Carolina from 1901 to 1903.”
