City Directories and History: Several of the Mayhugh Heritage maps are extensive and relate to numerous early plats throughout Chester, Fairfield and York Counties as well as overlap other Mayhugh Heritage plat maps. Therefore, take your time in reviewing the attached list of individuals associated with this composite map. Pay close attention to the spellings of their names, which may not be the current or popular 21st century spelling. For example: the name Agnes is also spelled Agness, Lyle might be spelled Lyle, Lyles and Lylies. And the Brakefield name is often spelled Breakfield as is the Fairey name – often spelled as Faires, Fairy and Feries. So, take a minute and think of alternative spellings before giving up on your family search! This logic and reasoning applies to all of your research needs across Roots and Recall.
Again, many of the Mayhugh plat maps overlap and have often been improved, so you might find the same individuals listed on numerous plats (from three counties), and spelled in different manners. This composite map is so large you might need a magnifying glass to read it adequately after enhancing it on your own computer. Just take your time in researching the Mayhugh Maps. They are an invaluable resource covering three counties that must be individually searched by county domains on Roots and Recall’s platform.

GUM LOG BRANCH: Historian, Tom Mayhugh wrote on 7.27.24 – Gum Log Branch is the branch of South Fork that runs through your property, (Wade Fairey’s), and up behind Brattonsville. Starts up above Bethesda Church. Also called: Becky’s Branch…. Furthermore: The GUM LOG ROAD is the one that enters Brattonsville on South side there where all the slaves are buried (also known as part of the Rocky Mount Road). It crossed the branch north of Mobley Store Road on what used to be Chappell property. Pete Chappell I think (owned that parcel). Came down in front of you somewhere (on Booney Rd.,) maybe where the road is now. It went east close to Chappell Road and forded the South Fork Creek just South of where Saluda Road crosses the creek today. There is a break in the guardrail on Hwy 72. It coincides with the old Mountain Gap Road which ran behind the old Bill & Becky Wooten house (Gill House), and behind Jerry Locke’s property. Still a piece of it left that runs from Rodman to Lyles Road. (The old piece of farm road on which Rosa P. Gaston – Strait owned property, led by the Water’s old gin complex to Lyles Road.) Information from Tom Mayhugh with notes via WBF.

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
Thanks!
