City Directories and History: The old Hambright home, constructed in the late 1880’s by Mr. Anderson C. Hambright and his wife, Sallie D. Hambright, has gone through numerous architectural changes and shows little of the home’s original features, having been removed or covered by years of updates. Review the images collected and shared here to enjoy seeing what the home once offered so handsomely to the community.
Local historians, Melvin and Janice Ware were invaluable in gaining access to the Hambright – Larkin property in Aug. 2020. The current owners share images and information provided this page as a PDF. “The Hambright-Larkin house is located near the west entrance to the Kings Mountain National Park on the SW corner at the intersection of Rock House Road and Hwy. 216. The house is said to have been built by a grandson of Col. Frederick Hambright whose old homeplace stood nearby across the main roadway. Heather says she can provide the date of construction and name of the Hambright grandson who built the house. In earlier times it was said that the road known as Rock House Road actually passed through the yard and by the front of the home. There is a small red outbuilding located on the east side of the house beside a circular drive. According to Heather, this building was moved from the Bridges airport property in Kings Mountain and has been expanded and converted into a small cottage complete
with bedroom, bath and kitchen. Heather shared a framed photo of the main house made in earlier times which I scanned and photographed as best I could without removing it from the glassed frame.” Larkin Contribution 2020
