The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Aug. 26, 1880 – “Mr. D.D. Gaston will soon award a contract for construction of a two story brick store measuring 30-70 feet.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Sept. 27, 1883 – “Mr. D.D. Gaston has just finished the handsome and imposing two story brick storehouse on the corner of Shelby and Cherokee Streets.”
City Directories and History: This building, along with the D.L. Brown store building, is possibly the oldest standing building in downtown Blacksburg. Built in the late 1880’s, the store was first used by D.D. Gaston who moved to Blacksburg from the Buffalo Community. Gaston, who was also a quite wealthy landowner, gave the land to built First Baptist Church in 1911. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, the building was occupied by the Carolina Cafe, an elegant restaurant. The Star Theater, operated by Zaye Bridges, occupied the building for most of the 1940’s and 1950’s.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on April 25, 1878 – “The Baptist Church at Black’s Station has received a bell ordered sometime ago. It weighs 490 pounds.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Oct. 18, 1883 – “The work of building a parsonage for the Baptist Congregation at Black’s Station will begin at once.”
The Yorkville Enquirer for Aug. 12, 1891 reported, “Mr. D.D. Gaston is making a survey of Gaston Falls on the Broad River, with a view of erecting a cotton factory at that place. The falls are only 2.5 miles from the railroad, over an easy grade.”
The YV Enquirer reported on Sept. 26, 1894 – “Mr. D.D. Gaston is placing materials for a large dwelling on the corner of Cherokee and Rutherford streets.”
