City Directories and History: Located at Red Bank, the Saxe Gotha Cotton Mill (Red Bank Mill), was started in 1895, Allen Jones serving as the first President of the mill.
The Yorkville Enquirer of Oct. 22, 1885 reported – “Mr. J.R. London and Mr. A.E. Hutchison of Rock Hill have become associated with Capt. Willie Jones and Dr. T.C. Robertson of Columbia in the ownership of the Red Bank cotton factory in Lexington County. It was recently purchased for $23,500. It is expected that the mill will resume work in about two weeks. Improvements being made include: electric lights.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on March 4, 1880 – “Mr. John Green, Pres. of the Red Bank Factory, has gone to New York to purchase new machinery to increase the capacity of the mill by 50%.”
Later the paper reported on Jan. 27, 1887 on the financial capital raised locally. – “The First National Bank is capitalized at $50,000., all raised in Rock Hill. The Savings Bank of Rock Hill has stock which is entirely owned by Rock Hill people. Rock Hill capital also is invested in two banks in Charlotte, two banks in Columbia, and banks in Chester and Winnsboro. Rock Hill men built and own most of the stock of the Cotton Factory and own nearly all the stock of the Red Bank Factory in Lexington, and are invested in the Fishing Creek and Graniteville Factories.”
