City Directories and History: The Yorkville Enquirer of March 21, 1872 reported – “There are about 90 students on the role of the S.C. University.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Oct. 16, 1873 – “Henry E. Hayne, who is Sec. of State and a colored man, has been admitted as a student of the Medical Dept., of the S.C. University. Shortly after, professors M. LaBorde, A.N. Talley, and R.W. Gibbes, submitted their resignations.”
Also at USC on Oct. 23, 1873 – “Walter Jones, colored, a clerk in the State Tres. Dept., has passed an examination and has been enrolled as a student in the law school of the SC University.”
