“Touring S.C. one address at a time.”
In 2017, Roots and Recall will begin offering several opportunities to enjoy using the website for more than just looking at beautiful houses and history. As a friend recently stated, “of course R&R is climbing the internet ranks, it is a beautiful look at history, why wouldn’t it be popular?” But in reality such a statement overlooks the extraordinary data and linked resources it provides. So in the new year, R&R will begin offering a new way to enjoy local history, what we call Carolina DeJaunts. These will be emailed to subscribers several times each month, hopefully tantalizing recipients with new materials and the means of touring destinations both electronically from home but also venturing out on weekend road jaunts. Yes, we’ll include drive-able routes for users to enjoy seeing and connecting to the Carolina Backcountry, Pee Dee, Upcountry and Lowcountry. For non-subscriber’s please signup at DeJaunts@rootsandrecall.com, to receive notifications.
Roots and Recall covers some 32,000 sites, and most users will look at only a minute fraction. We want to offer jaunts as a method of enhancing subscribers’ knowledge of local history but also their enjoyment of it. DeJaunts will hopefully kindle a spirit of travel and adventure for those who can ramble across the state. Most jaunts will be built around specific subjects and within a reasonable driving distance for an afternoon of adventure. Be sure to tell your friends about this opportunity! Here are a few R&R sites to enjoy from the comfort of your home:
Besides Carolina DeJaunts, Roots and Recall wishes to offer other means of sharing content and engaging its audience. For instance, did you know that there are nearly a thousand sites on R&R dealing specifically with church histories? Two methods of sharing these are already being used. The first is simply through linking the R&R church pages to the church’s official website. But in numerous cases, churches are going further and having R&R decals added to their church entrances using R&R’s “This Building Has History” program. One local Episcopal church recently ordered decals for all their entrances as well as a video. These will allow both members and visitors access to historic data on the church’s history. It also serves as a means of providing visual access to visitors without opening doors, a great security feature.
Later in the year, Roots and Recall hopes to also begin offering added blogs on historic construction and artisans who did the work. These research articles will be offered to better inform subscribers of the techniques, skills, and overall historic importance of artisans who built handsome houses and the materials used to furnish them. We would like to encourage individuals to submit their own research papers for potential distribution along with those provided by a handful of select scholars who will be regulars.
Roots and Recall is excited to be in a position to enhance its communication with subscribers and others that follow R&R on Facebook, and non-subscribers who simply reading the blogs from the website’s homepage. Preserving local history through our common interest in sharing does work! All you need do is simply take a look at the boxes of outstanding materials being received in the R&R office for digitization and distribution. Warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from R&R!
