City Directories and History: 1954 – George L. Long, James G. Long
Built by Confederate veteran, Mr. George W. Smith (1844 – 1926), who was a successful contractor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of his buildings date between 1898 and 1920. He constructed a variety of small mill houses as well as elegant dwellings for Union’s upper middle class in fine neighborhoods. The home dates to circa 1900-1910. The home was contracted by Judge W.H. Wallace for his son, D.H. Wallace and constructed in the late 19th century. The home was later lived in by members of the Wilburn family and Union’s Sheriff, Jim Long.
