City Directories and History: This dwelling was constructed by George Wilbert Smith, one of Unions leading local contractor in about 1900. Confederate veteran, Mr. George W. Smith (1844 – 1926) was a successful contractor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of his buildings date between 1898 and 1920. He constructed a variety of small mill houses as well as elegant dwellings for Union’s upper middle class in fine neighborhoods. This small mill home was constructed in circa 1900.
