City Directories and History: 1954 – William Sanders, Spencer Sanders
Confederate veteran, Mr. George W. Smith (1844 – 1926) was a successful contractor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of his buildings date between 1898 and 1920. He constructed a variety of small mill houses as well as elegant dwellings for Union’s upper middle class in fine neighborhoods. Contracted about 1900 and the street is named for the important Union contractor.
