The Rock Hill Herald reported on Jan. 29, 1885 – “The town of Marion is in a poor condition. It is said that there are no school houses for white children.”
City Directories and History: The historic Marion Opera house and Town Hall. The building originally cost some $10,000. in 1892 and it was remodeled extensively in 1980.
109 West Godbold Street (1892)—story brick (coiranon bond) structure located behind southwest square. Simple classic revival design has semi-circular arched doorways and windows on lower floor. Radial design louvers are present in each of four gables. Wooden false dormers on front and back are superimposed on low gabled roof. Much of original wainscoting and woodwork remains. First floor housed courtroom, jail, and fire department. Second floor served public speaking, graduation exercises, and theatrical productions. Present owner. Pee Dee Motor Company, has altered interior and installed showroom windows in left hand corner of lower floor. (SC Dept. of Archives)
