courthouse was constructed in the Georgian style by architect Peter H. Hammarskold and constructed at a cost of $12,500.
Courthouse—Public Square (1853)—style adapted from the Georgian with influence of Robert Mills. Square rusticated pillars support the four Doric columns and pediment. Structure painted grey with quoins and pillars in charcoal grey. Wrought-iron stairs lead to the courtroom portico. Woven into the design of each step is name of metal worker “Hayward Bartlett Baltimore.” Courtroom contains original pews. Third courthouse to be built on square. (SC Dept. of Archives)
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on July 31, 1873 – “A meeting was held at Marion last week to support the development of the Cheraw and Little River railroad. Addresses were made by: Capt. T.C. Dunn, J.T. Walsh, Esq., Colonel J.H. Hudson, General W.H. Harllee, and Colonel W.S. Mullins.”
