City Directories and History: This 1880’s home has long been associated with the Buford family.
“The Buford home is another prominent landmark on the old Milton Road. The spacious old building is on the crest of a hill commanding a beautiful view of the surrounding areas. The two-story frame structure has a wide columned veranda across the front of the first floor and a massive brick chimney at each end of the main body. The kitchen which stood to the rear of the main building has been moved and connected to the house. Remains of the great chimney of the old kitchen mark the spot where the kitchen once stood.
Surrounding the house are ancient oak and crepe myrtle trees. Three stone mounting blocks, a convenience for travelers of an earlier day, indicate the location of the old road.
Earliest information is vague, but it is thought that the property is a part of the grant to James Williams who. came to this section from North Carolina prior to the Revolutionary period. In the 1850’s the property was owned by Jesse M. Young, the ownership having come into the Young family through marriage to a Williams daughter. In 1876, A. Vance owned the property and manor house which were sold to Fair Buford in 1913. This became the seat of Mr. Buford’s vast plantation operations. The property next passed into the hands of a son, Richard Buford. It is now occupied by Mr. Buford’s widow, her son and his family.”
