City Directories and History: THOMAS WALLACE HOUSE
Constructed circa 1804; rehabilitated 1968-69
The cabinetmaker Thomas Wallace, whose shop on Queen Street produced furniture in the prevailing Federal style for the Charleston elite, constructed this three- story wooden single house 011 a raised basement in about 1804. The closed gable end of the roof and the open Greek Revival piazzas, which do not have a street entry, are perhaps the only features that set this dwelling apart from its similarly styled neighbor at 43 Laurens Street. Wallace sold the house in 1815 to Capt. Nathaniel Greene Hilliard, a Connecticut émigré.
