City Directories and History: THOMAS WALLACE HOUSE AND MARTIN DOWD TENEMENTS – Constructed c. 1845-50; rehab; 1969
“Although the Wallace House at 46 Anson Street was constructed separately from the others, by the mid-1850s most of these structures seem to have become part of a complex of rental properties owned by Martin Dowd, a bottle dealer. Wallace’s house was built as a rental property by a substantial dry
goods merchant and is unusual in its setback from the street and L shape. A one-story shop formerly stood in front and served through much of the late-1800s as a barbershop. The brick double tenement at 48-50 Anson Street, with a cigar store in one end and a bakery in the other; the brick building at 52 Anson Street, housing a grocery store on the first floor; and the brick house with arched gate around the corner at 27 Wentworth Street formed a connected complex when in Dowd’s ownership.”
