City Directories and History: The map this page shows numerous locations otherwise rarely designated. These include: Moffettsville, McDaniels Ferry, Rogersville, Tarrences PO, Centerville PO, Andersonville, Wilson’s Ferry, Holland’s Ferry, Pearce’s Ford, and Clark’s Ferry…
Via an act of the S.C. Assembly, Andersonville was created in ca. 1891 with land owners Col. Elias Earle, General Samuel Earle and General Robert Anderson, whom the county and city are named. It was a flourishing town along the Savannah River and at one time exceeded the size of Pendleton. As early as 1812 a flourishing Academy for girls was established and beautiful homes lined the main streets. In 1840 and again in 1852 floods ruined most of the city’s gins, wool mills, and river port infrastructure, leaving the town in ruins. The Andersonville Ferry reportedly continued operations until the early 1940s.
