PRESERVING PALMETTO HISTORY AND HERITAGE
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Aug. 3, 1871 – “The culture of watermelons in S.C. and Ga., is an important business. Almost the entire supply for the NY market is raised around Aiken and Augusta. The crop is sent to Savannah and Charleston for shipment. The early melons are shipped by railroad but later shipments are sent by steamers. This crop is much more profitable than cotton. So far this year over 60,000 melons have been shipped to NY, Phil, and Boston. They sell for a retail price of .50-.75 cents each. Some melons are grown in Florida but they are inferior.
Roots and Recall’s widespread acceptance and successes in fostering preservation efforts across S.C., have been a remarkable journey of discovery, and of creating new friendships. Aiken County’s history is bountifully displayed across R&R.com, with links to pages in adjoining counties. It is one of the website’s frequently utilized. Take a few minutes to see why one R&R member stated, “Roots and Recall is a National Treasure, I look forward to receiving your blog posts – it is like I am hearing from an old friend.”
