City Directories and History: “H. M. Arthur of Union sends the following: “I noted in the recent issue that you wanted some information on Worthy’s Bottom. I am sure you are talking about the very extensive bottom land on Broad River, which was formerly owned by Hughes Worthy, and located along the east bank of Broad River in Chester County. The Broad River at that point makes a deep turn toward Union, and it is only nine miles from Union. However, to get there, you must go to a little place on Highway #9 about six or seven miles east of Lockhart, known as Wilkesburg. The road from that point leads down to the Worthy Bottoms. They are located about six or seven miles south of Lockhart. This tract of land, about 1900 acres, was often completely covered over when the Broad River used to flood back in those days. Mr. Worthy ran a cable ferry from Union County side to the Chester County side in that it was much nearer to Union than to go to Chester, some twenty or more miles away. This was known as the Worthy Ferry……”
