City Directories and History: This historic church was originally pastored by Rev. Richard Furman in 1772. The current building dates from 1848 and is a testament to the lovely appreciation of Greek Revival architecture.

Robert’s Academy—Statesburg—1799. Established by Rev. Roberts, a prominent Baptist minister of the High Hills Baptist Church. Bishop Capers of the Methodist church attended this academy from 1801 to 1805. Says Ramsay in his history, “Several pupils educated by him have entered the sophomore and some the junior class in the South Carolina College.” An exceptional academy and one which prepared the way for the founding of Furman University.
Stateburg Academy—Stateburg, Sumter County— General Thomas Sumter and Dr. Richard Furman advertised May 4, 1786, that the seminary of learning designed for Stateburg was now open, and that the gentleman who would preside brought remarkable testimonials from America and Europe. This academy was possibly a forerunner of the later Furman University.
