City Directories and History: This Gothic cruciform style Episcopal church was built in 1895 under the supervision of ex-slave, Kennedy Lewis. The Watchman and Southron as of Aug. 8, 1894 reported – “In the news from Hagood, the steeple of the new Episcopal Church was struck by lightening last Friday and completely demolished. Kennedy Lewis, the well known colored carpenter, was at work on the church at the time and had a narrow escape from death.”
