City Directories and History: “Campobello, on Highway 176 fifteen miles north of Spartanburg, was once a favorite health spa for Low Country residents. The town was also a learning center after the Rev. I. W. Wingo, a
Baptist preacher, started the Monk Institute here in 1894. Oak Knob Hotel, which burned in recent times, hosted numerous visitors to Chalybeate Sulphur Spring located downhill from the hotel. This mineral spring during its heyday was surrounded by a brick wall and covered with a wooden structure. The name Campobello, which was given when the Spartanburg-Asheville Railroad was built through the community, has had various translations, the most popular being “beautiful field.”
