City Directories and History: In 2016, a group of maps were provided Roots and Recall for digitization and indexing for genealogy and preservation. The Spartanburg Township Map was one of these, which R&R has divided into usable sections, providing a quick means of searching. Be aware, it covers not only present day Spartanburg County’s S.C., but also much of what became in the late 19th century parts of Cherokee and Union counties. In a number of cases, the names on the map were eligible and the indexing team either left the names off or provided an educated guess. Similar and alike names were found throughout the county, therefore the same name does appear on numerous maps. We hope you will find them useful in tracking properties, roads, and genealogy.
Remember when searching for names on R&R it is often best to bracket the names in quotation marks for best results. R&R does not look for variations of the name but the exact spacing and spelling of how it has been entered. Variables for John Sam Smith therefore might be: John Smith, J. Smith, J. S. Smith, etc…..
Click under the MORE INFORMATION / PDF MAP link, found under the primary image, on this page for an enlargeable PDF of the Township Map. All other sections, #’s 1 – 25 are found by searching the specific name or names of the searchable individuals and locations.
Explore history, houses, and stories across S.C. Your membership provides you with updates on regional topics, information on historic research, preservation, and monthly feature articles. But remember R&R wants to hear from you and assist in preserving your own family genealogy and memorabilia.
Visit the Southern Queries – Forum to receive assistance in answering questions, discuss genealogy, and enjoy exploring preservation topics with other members. Also listed are several history and genealogical researchers for hire.

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
