Many of the Confederate receipts are for payment to R. W. Bates of St. Matthews. This appears to be Rezin Wesley Bates (1819 – 1892), M.D., who lived in St. Matthews, Calhoun County, S.C. It is unclear as to why these receipts are in the Dantzler Collection papers.

IMAGE GALLERY (The Dantzler Collection provides little reference to slavery or post Civil War related African – American history. The majority of the receipts deal with payments to the “extended” family, for their slaves having worked in the defense of Charleston, during the Civil War. The collection also has several payments for services during the 1870s., as well as, a lengthy contract for a farm lease.)
