City Directories and History: The cotton warehouse and gin at Mt. Carmel in McCormick County is an example of just how swiftly the South has changed from an agrarian society to one of powerful manufacturing and technology. Thousands of gin
complexes once dotted the state’s landscape and they have nearly all disappeared. The Hester’s complex remains intact but not longer gins cotton for farmers in rural McCormick County, there are none. The complex and gin remain in remarkable condition in 2015.
