City Directories and History: Another simple Hall and Parlor, Carolina “I” style home, from the mid 19th century, this house retains many of its original features. In 1979, the survey team recorded this as Knollwood Farm, in the Mountville area.
“The historian may travel out South Harper Extension in the town of Laurens to the Henry Milam home, make a left turn and within a short distance he will see the “Squire” Wharton house on the left. It has been determined by family members that William, nicknamed Squire, Wharton lived in this country place during the late 1800’s. Neither the name of the builder nor the date of construction can be ascertained.
William Wharton was the father of four children — John Wharton; Emma Wharton, who married Frank Fuller; Ella Wharton, who married James Madison Hudgens and Olive Wharton, who married Athens Ballew. The rectangular, weatherboarded house is a two-storied structure with rock chimney at each end. On the second floor there are two large bedrooms with wide pine ceiling boards. The building was pegged together, and is in good condition today.
For a period around the turn of the century, the Wharton property was in the Smith estate. Julia Smith Humbert, wife of Captain H. B. Humbert — long time supervisor of Laurens County, owned the property which then came to be known as the Humbert country place. The Humberts also maintained a residence on West Main Street, Laurens, now occupied by Miss Gertrude Barnett.
After the Humbert ownership, W. Jack Greer of Greenville held the Wharton — Humbert property until 1963, at which time it was purchased by Edgar B. Copeland, the present owner.”
