City Directories and History: “Thornwell Dunlap of Clinton has identified the old Gary home on the Clinton-Greenwood Highway. The house was built by a Mr. Gary (full name unknown) who upon moving to Mississippi sold the property to Doctor Richard S. Dunlap, a recent graduate of Jefferson Medical College. The Garys were paid in Confederate money.
Doctor Dunlap, grandfather of Thornwell Dunlap, served in the War Between the States as a medical officer. During the absence of Doctor Dunlap, his wife, the former Sarah Ewell Black of Milton, whose ancestor was John Black of pre-Revolutionary days, was said to have been the first female in Laurens County to teach school. Mrs. Dunlap held classes in the home for all who cared to come and study with her.
The property was inherited by Rufus Thornwell Dunlap, father of our informant. He in turn sold it to John Young of the “Mississippi Youngs.” The old Dunlap burial grounds are on Jacobs Highway (South Carolina Highway 56).”
