City Directories and History: The agricultural history of Laurens County is a wonderful reminder of just what an important legacy these images tell of the changes that took place in rural communities throughout the South. Most of these events took place in the post WW I era, as cotton prices declined, labor moved off the farms, gins were dismantled and within forty years few farmers continued growing wheat, cotton, corn or even hay. Those of were born in post WW II often have fading memories of visiting family and friends on their farms were horses and mules continued doing much of the work. These images are also an important reminder that thousands of white children picked cotton along with their parents to make ends meet along side those of the African-American tenant farmers who shared in the labor.
