City Directories and History: “For the past twenty-five years Mr. and Mrs. Olan J. Bolt have taken pride in their ownership of a house said to have been built before the War Between the States. Located on a secondary road leading from Barksdale to Trinity Church, the building has two stories and an attic with windows for ventilation. Granite steps lead to the front entrance where the original brass lock with key is still in use. On two of the inside doors are the original locks.
Since John Cannon, an extensive landowner and a prominent citizen, lived with his family in the house for many years, local residents refer to it as the old Cannon home. When a daughter of Mr. Cannon was married to Doctor George Knight, the Knights became owners of the country estate. It was in the hands of Providence Life and Insurance Company when it was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Bolt.
The present owners state that they were told, when they purchased the house, it had been built by John Williams (perhaps Colonel John D. Williams) for a summer home. The heart pine used in construction was pulled by oxen from the lower part of the county and put together with pegs. The sills are said to be eighteen inches square and the solid square pine posts support a spacious porch across the front of the first story.”
