Known as the Barksdale home, it is one of the anchor pieces of architecture along West Main Street’s historic area, and features a high style of Stick architecture making it one of West Main’s most distinct pieces of architecture.
This house was constructed in 1892 for John Augustus Barksdale, a founder and cashier of the First National Bank of Laurens. Click here for added information on this house and the Historic District.
“The merchants have the benefit of both the National Bank of Laurens and the People’s Loan and Exchange Bank. The former has been in operation since July 1886. The president of the bank is Dr. J.A. Barksdale. A dividend of four per cent was declared in the early part of the present month. The capital stock of the concern is $63,000, which it is understood will soon be increased to $100,000.
The People’s Loan and Exchange Bank was organized on the 4th of the present July and has not yet made a history for itself. The president of the bank is Capt. Albert Dial.” Reprinted from South Carolina in the 1880s: A Gazetteer by J.H. Moore, Sandlapper Publishing Company – 1989
