City Directories and History: 1917 – Vacant, 1948 – A. Hubert Johnsey, 1975 – Mary F. Johnsey
Commonly referred to as the Johnsey House, this circa 1896 home of Queen Anne style, remains one of Lauren’s architectural masterpieces. This home was a design of George F. Barber, in his pattern book. See www.housemouse.net, for additional information.
Additional information: The Queen Anne style residence was built in 1896. It is one of two homes in Laurens designed by the Barber Architectural Firm of Knoxville, Tennessee. These homes were constructed by local carpenters from blueprints and plans ordered from George F. Barber’s company. The porches on this house are joined together with circular roof canopies over the corners. This feature provides an aesthetically pleasing look to the home while capturing the breezes. Note the corkscrew finial on the west side turret.
David A. Davis was President of the Davis – Roper Company. A large clothier located on the public square, it claimed to be “Laurens’ best store” “outfitting the whole family.” The house was later purchased by Andrew H. Johnsey, a cotton broker and merchant.
