City Directories and History: 1917 – (#118) U.S. Post Office, 1948 – J.C. Shell Grocery, 1975
This location was used as office and furniture sales in 1922 as well as the location of the U.S. Post Office in Laurens. Originally constructed in circa 1913, this facility replaced an earlier frame post office. In 1965 the Palmetto Bank purchased the old PO and demolished it to make room for their new bank building.
“West Main Street was one of four streets that led to Laurens Court House Square. The other streets were East Main, North Harper, and South Harper Streets. The residential area extended a mile from the square in all directions, and granite mile markers were placed on each street. The First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Methodist Church, and several residences are captured in the streetscape of West Main Street. Even though buggy tracks are seen in the dirt street, Laurens boasted paved sidewalks complete with granite curbing. Utility poles shown in these scenes indicate that electric lights illuminated the homes and businesses of Laurens residents in 1910.” Information from: Laurens Co Postcard Series, LCMA, Arcadia Publishing – 2007
