Horry County Courthouse
“In 1906, Col. D. A. Spivey introduced in the General Assembly the Act authorizing the construction of this building, the third Horry County Courthouse. The building committee was composed of C. P. Quattlebaum, John C. Spivey and John P. Durham. The formal opening was held in 1908, with Gov. Martin F. Ansel as speaker. Mr. W. L. Bryan, Horry County Clerk of Court from 1909 to 1927, supervised the planting of the many oak trees on the grounds. The building underwent renovations in 1937 and 1964. It is crowned with an octagonal cupola topped by a finial with an eagle weathervane. A portrait of Revolutionary War Colonel Peter I lorry, for whom the county was named, hangs in the front hall, given by the local DAR chapter.”
