City Directories and History: Ballenger Mill on State Road S-14 in the past was called Green’s Mill and Bates’ Mill. Named for its owners, it is one of the oldest mills in Glassy Mountain Township.

The Rock Hill Herald reported on Feb. 12, 1880 – “The Batesville Factory has been in steady operation since its purchase by Mr. George Putnum in November. He has produced nearly 300 bales of yarn since then.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on March 10, 1881 – “Fire entirely consumed the Batesville Cotton Factory, twelve miles from Greenville. The value was between $15,000.- $20,000.” The Yorkville Enquirer on March 10 also stated: “The factory was located near Buena Vista, 12 miles from Greenville. It was originally the property of the Batesville Manufacturing Company and was bought in Nov. 1879 by Mr. George Putnum for $8,000. He expanded the mill and installed new machinery worth about $12,000. The factory building was three stories high, measured 44-130 ft, and had 1,440 spindles.”
The Herald reported on Aug. 25, 1881 – “The Batesville Factory in Greenville Co., which was destroyed by fire, is being rebuilt and will soon be ready to resume operations.”
